Search Engine Optimisation

Many people tell us that a key goal for their website is to be found in the search engines? "I want to be on page one in Google."

It's what they leave out of that sentence that is telling. We simply ask "ok, what search term would you like to be on page one for? Why do you want to be found for that search term? What will that do for your business?".

Our approach to search engine optimisation is to try and understand your business, we'll define some business rules and goals, and then try and determine what search terms will best suit your website. We need to find out what people who are looking for your type of product or service are actually typing into the search engines.

By understanding this we can start to see exactly what content your site should include.

Search engines like relevant content

Much of search engine optimisation is simple common sense. A search engine will get a request from a user and it will try and match that request against its index of sites. It will try and deliver the most relevant results. As an end user we are happy they work in this way.

As a site owner we therefore need to understand our content and make sure what we are saying is relevant, accurate and up to date.

Importantly if you have much to say about your service or product then you are half way there.

Websites should consider search engines as they're being built - not after!

Search engine optimisation needs to be considered at the outset. The way we structure and code our pages, the text we use, the titles, the phrases we identify as key, will all form a part of a well optimised site.

Importantly its really about writing good rich content that site users will find useful, engaging and worthwhile.

In-bound links can be relevant

Another important measure of relevance for a search engine is how many people link to your site. You can tell directories and portals that you exist, but more important is your content. People will link to you if they like your content.

There are pitfalls of course, don't engage in link exchanges that can be damaging, but if you adopt an ethical strategy based on making your content relevant and specific then you can do well.

How we optimise your site

We'll work with you to identify the search phrases most suitable to your business and we'll help you monitor and update these. We'll help build a site that keeps your content fresh and relevant. Our code will adhere to web standards and we'll recommend solutions based on the right technology for the job.

We won't baffle you with science, we'll simply work together to agree strategies, and write content that will deliver results.
